Post-primary ARRT certification for the angiography and interventional suite.
Vascular-Interventional Radiography (VI) is a post-primary certification administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). It recognizes technologists who have advanced beyond a primary discipline into the specialized work of the angiography and interventional radiology suite, where imaging guides catheter-based and image-guided therapeutic procedures.
The credential certifies that a technologist can competently assist with both vascular and nonvascular interventional procedures: preparing and monitoring patients, maintaining sterile fields, operating fluoroscopic and digital subtraction angiography equipment, and supporting the physician throughout diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. To pursue it, candidates must already hold ARRT certification and registration in a supporting primary category and document the required structured education and clinical experience.
The examination is a computer-based, multiple-choice test built from ARRT's published content specifications. Questions are distributed across defined content categories covering patient care, safety, procedures, and equipment, and passing results in the post-primary VI credential. Mapped to the ARRT content outline.
Patient assessment, monitoring, medications, contrast administration, and pre- and post-procedure care.
Radiation protection for patient and staff, sterile technique, and infection control in the interventional suite.
Fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, and image-recording systems used to guide procedures.
Angiographic access, catheter and guidewire selection, and vascular anatomy for diagnostic studies.
Therapeutic interventions such as angioplasty, stenting, embolization, and thrombolysis.
Image-guided biliary, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and drainage or biopsy procedures.
Drugs used during interventions, contrast agents, dosing, and management of adverse reactions.
Registered radiologic technologists working in or moving into angiography and interventional radiology who want to formalize their advanced expertise with an ARRT post-primary credential.
