About the Radiologist Assistant exam

The Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.) is an advanced-level certification administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). It recognizes an experienced radiographer who has completed advanced academic and clinical preparation to practice as a radiologist extender, taking on an expanded role in patient care and diagnostic imaging under the direct supervision of a supervising radiologist.

The credential certifies competence in advanced patient assessment and management, patient education, and the performance of selected radiologic procedures. Radiologist assistants work as part of the radiology team, helping to manage patient care, perform fluoroscopic and other designated procedures, and communicate findings to the supervising radiologist, who retains responsibility for interpretation and diagnosis.

Earning the R.R.A. requires meeting ARRT ethics, education, and examination requirements. Candidates complete an advanced radiologist assistant academic program that includes graduate-level coursework and a structured, radiologist-directed clinical preceptorship documenting hands-on competencies before sitting for the certification examination. Confirm all current requirements directly with ARRT.
