Earn the ARRT post-primary credential in breast ultrasound.
Breast Sonography (BS) is a post-primary certification and registration administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). It recognizes technologists and sonographers who have specialized education and clinical experience in ultrasound imaging of the breast and axilla, and who demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to perform high-quality diagnostic and interventional breast sonography.
As a post-primary pathway, the BS credential builds on an existing ARRT certification in an approved supporting discipline (such as Radiography or Sonography). Candidates must complete the required structured education and documented clinical experience, comply with the ARRT Standards of Ethics, and pass the certification examination.
The computer-based exam presents multiple-choice questions drawn from ARRT's published content specifications. It covers patient care, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, breast anatomy and pathology, sonographic technique, and image evaluation, as well as guidance of interventional procedures. Always confirm current requirements and exam details directly with ARRT.
